Zeena Schreck, formerly known as Zeena LaVey, is the daughter of Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey. During the height of the “Satanic Panic” in the 1980s, Zeena was a high priestess for the Church of Satan and regularly appeared on talk shows and other programs alongside her husband, Nicolas Schreck. Together they served as the Church of Satan’s spokespersons dedicated to dispelling rumors about Satanic practices, as well as to debate with religious pundits about the church’s validity.
Then in 1990, Zeena abruptly departed the Church of Satan and cut off all contact with her famous father. In later years, it was revealed that Anton LaVey had been sexually abusive to Zeena during childhood and was also physically abusive towards her mother. Zeena gave birth to a son at the age of 13, and while it is widely speculated that Anton fathered his daughter’s child, Zeena has never publicly confirmed this as fact. However, she has publicly stated numerous times that the Church of Satan was ultimately a self-serving gimmick. From a Vice interview in 2013:
“He had followers who took things very seriously and genuinely believed in this entity Satan and not so much in Anton LaVey’s idea of Satanism. As it turns out, he wasn’t very knowledgeable on the subject and, in essence, created a postmodern version of Satanism as he went along. It was a manifestation of his ego” (X)
Zeena has long since renounced her maiden name and refuses to be addressed with it by anyone under any circumstances. Currently she is the co-founder and leader of the Sethian Liberation Movement, a non-sectarian tantric magickal practice which seeks to heal victims of abuse and defectors of religious cults both emotionally and spiritually. She also composes and performs experimental music that focuses on religious themes – her most recent solo show was at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen music festival in 2015.
