Is Andy’s Mom…Jessie’s Emily?!?!
This mind-blowing theory about Toy Story 2’s secret toy/kid connection comes courtesy of Jon Negroni. He wrote a very long post about it here, but the basics are as follows:
- The cowboy hat that Andy frequently wears in the films is NOT a reproduction of Woody’s hat, but Jessie’s.
- No doubt about it – it’s the same red hat, only Andy’s is missing the white ribbon wrapped around the center. But
look at Andy’s hat again. There’s a dark strip where the white ribbon should be. Perhaps this is the only un-faded part of the hat, un-faded because it was protected – for years – by the now missing white ribbon.- Take a close look at what’s on the bed in Emily’s room. It’s the same hat that Andy wears, only with the white ribbon still intact!
- Emily’s room is portrayed as pretty old-fashioned, implying that this takes place quite a few years before Andy was born. How many years? From the looks of the late 1960s/early 1970s decorations on the wall, 20-30 years before Toy Story 2. That’d put Emily at an age where she could easily have a child Andy’s age!
- Emily and Andy’s mom have pretty much the same haircut. This one’s a bit flimsy, admittedly, but in cartoons it’s pretty de rigueur to use such blatant visual cues as a sort of ‘shorthand’ for the viewer.
- One last too-cool-to-be-a-coincidence bit of of Toy Story 2 trivia: In the donation box that Emily puts Jessie in, we do not see the
hat. We DO see other remnants of her connection with Jessie, but the hat
is noticeably absent. What do you think?
